High-Capacity Players

Apple iPod - 20 GByte
The 20 Gig apple iPod is the high capacity value king is not just for tune but for pix as well. Apple made it really easy to view pictures with its menu system. Bear in mind that this box has a 2 inch low-res screen so you will still need a tv or a PC to show off your pictures to your friends. But you will always have them with you and that is relly cool. This is the player to beat. The easy to use interface, click wheel and coolness factor continue to blow away the competition. ~$300

Cowon iAudio X5 - The best of the rest.
This player does tunes, pix, and video on its bright LCD color screen. However, like the iPod, the screen is small and blocky. The X5 really excells at playing music. The audio quality of this player seems better than most and it has seperate boost for bass. ~$300

Mainstream Player

Apple iPod Nano - 20 GByte
Apple retired the mini when it introduced the Nano. This 4 Gig apple iPod is a refined player - size, price, and quality. THe nano is just 0.3 inchec thick and very light. It is the first mid-capacity player that uses a new generation of flash memory to replage the larger, heavier hard drive. It includes a 1.5 inch color screen for viewing pictures. What can we say, we're in love, the nano is a near perferfect player. ~$250.

Mini-Players

The Apple iPod Shuffle
THe shuffle is a minimal music stick. Minimal in size, features, and price. But it certainly delivers more that a minimal amount of fun. It creates playlists for you. You can let it download a random set of songs, or you can create a playlist and download it. The screenless design will either intrigue you or drive you crazy as you try to identify a special tune. ~$125

Speakers

Portable speakes turn your iPod into a serious sound system.

Altec Lansing - Inmotion IM7
This speaker dock delivers best in-calss sound for a reasonable price. A 4-inch sub woofer delivers a low-end base that fills a big room. The 1-inch tweeters project instrumentals sounds as well as any that we have reviewed. The only complaint that we have is about the bass and treble adjustments. You can only make these adjustments using the wireless remote, and the remote has a very short effective range. ~$250

Klipsch iFI
Watt rule and this baby has 200 of them. It needs the power since it sports a 8-inch subwoofer. This bab sounded almost as good as our current home system, definitely the best in it's class. It belts out wall shaking low and bright, clear highs. Unlike most of the competitors, this is a four pice system, not a single box. On the down side, the 8-inch subwoofer really stretches the term "portable" to the extreme. Great systems ~$400
